The Background:

Gluten Free Foods Limited is a family run business based in Elstree, Hertfordshire, specialising in gluten-free and wheat-free products.

Richard Ward, now Chairman, first started the company over 30 years ago after doctors diagnosed his daughter, Janine, with Coeliac Disease: at six-months of age, she weighed less than at birth, and was literally wasting away before finally testing positive for gluten intolerance at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London.

After months of research, and discovering how little choice there was on the market for people with this problem, Richard started his own business to supply gluten-free and wheat-free foods. Four years later, his son, Ellis, was born with the same condition. Ellis is now the Sales and Marketing Director of Gluten Free Foods Limited.

Richard's life-long work and the family's commitment in this field have brought many innovations to the market: 'long-life' breads, biscuits, cookies, pasta, pretzels, and chocolate-covered wafer bars. Many of the products are suitable for other restricted diets as they are also lactose-free, egg-free and low fat.

Today, the company has over 70 gluten-free and wheat-free products under its two main brands, Glutano and Barkat. In the UK, the products are sold through pharmacies, health food stores and leading supermarkets. The company also exports to some 30 countries around the world.

The family's personal experience of a chronic, debilitating and sometimes life-threatening condition remains a constant reminder that drives the motivation to develop, better and better products for people with gluten and wheat allergies.

Richard also founded the Coeliac Society to help other sufferers and their families. The Society now has some 70,000 members in the UK.

The current range of over 70 different products are sold under two brand names, Barkat and Glutano:

- Barkat Range of Products Includes gluten-free and wheat-free breads, pizza crusts, pot meals, bread mix, organic porridge flakes and ice-cream cones.

- Glutano Range of Products Includes gluten- free and wheat-free biscuits, wafers, crispbreads, pastas, flour mix, cornflakes and muesli.
